On the lower Rogue the bullroarer was a boy's plaything, free for any child to whirl. The contrast tells: children were forbidden to play with deer hooves — to print tracks with them meant the hunter would afterwards find only tracks — because deer-hoof rattles were this coast's ritual instrument. The roarer carried no such charge. Nobody stopped a boy from swinging it.
