sosam

Source term: bullroarer: sosam

sosam: bullroarer (Yamfinder, Rema, Wereave, Emil Mittag field data)

Rema speakers at Wereave, close to the Indonesian border in the far south-west of Papua New Guinea, call the bullroarer sosam. The word is the name of Sosom, the stone-bodied giant of the Marind across the border, whose voice the bullroarer was, and whose home some Marind tellings set in this borderland, among the Kanum. Sosam is the bullroarer's name too at Sota, just over the border, and among the Arammba at Kiriwa.
