navv’t: “beast.”
The Kildin Sámi name navv’t means “beast.” No instrument was ever collected: Soloviev reconstructs it from the name and from the Finnish pärrä he figures as its analogue — a wooden blade swung on a cord, its spinning interruptions rising and falling into gliding sounds like an animal’s howl, especially a wolf’s. Behind the howl he suggests the god Kavvrai, patron of the noaidi, who in the eastern Sámi telling made the wolf and the dog.
