This piece never left the factory. It comes from the lower discard area of a jade-working site at Itoigawa — two hundred metres from the modern shoreline of the coast that supplied all of Jōmon Japan's jadeite — amid raw stone, flakes, and unfinished tremolite products. Broken at both ends but keeping its upper hole, published with front, back, side and section drawings, it is best read as a pendant-blank: a suspension piece caught mid-production, in the very place such objects were made for export. For the atlas the value is the vantage: whatever the finished form was for, here is where the form was manufactured.

Context: Rokkanda Minami site lower discard area; Itoigawa coast-side jade/nephrite production context, 200 m inland from present shoreline. Date: Middle Jōmon, ~5470–4420 cal BP.
