Plate I. Tenetehara bullroarer from the lower Pindaré and Grajaú, Maranhão: carved rod, cotton cord, oval blade. Leipzig SAm 14158. Image source

Source term: Schwirrholz

Stick, cord and blade survive together: a carved rod for the hand, a twisted cotton cord, and a small oval board carved from wood. The set comes from the lower Pindaré and Grajaú rivers in Maranhão, from the Tenetehara who live there and are known as the Guajajara. Their Tembé kinsfolk, speaking the same Tupí-Guaraní language, moved on westward into Pará.
