Source term: snorhout

snorhout: Dutch, "whirring wood", the bullroarer.

In the Minahasa, the volcanic highlands around Lake Tondano at the northern tip of Sulawesi, the whirring plaything was made not of wood but of leaf. Across the Indies the snorhout was at its simplest a slat on a cord, spun fast until it gave out a peculiar rushing hum, and as a plaything it turned up on Java, among the Toba Batak of Sumatra and on Ambon. In the Minahasa it was cut from a leaf instead.

In de Minahasa worden ze van blad vervaardigd.

In the Minahasa they are made of leaf.
