Izikowitz, surveying South American instruments in 1935, found the instrument among only two Chaco peoples, the Mataco and the Caduveo, and judged that they had likely taken it, like several other elements, from the cultures of Amazonas to the north. Where the Caduveo whirled theirs at funerals, among the Mataco the instrument was a toy: Nordenskiöld found it a plaything of Choroti and Ashluslay children, and Métraux noted that they gave their bullroarers to the young in the same way. It sits in the British Museum under \"religious/ritual equipment.\"","pull_quote":"","pull_quote_translation":"","pull_quote_cite":"","term_gloss":"","cls":"play_practical","class_label":"Play / practical","color":"#24766D","is_candidate":false,"flags":["toy_survival"],"f_jade_complex":false,"f_women_taboo":false,"f_women_special":false,"f_snake":false,"sources":[{"citation":"British Museum object Am1937,0316.28.a; Erland Nordenskiöld (1913), p. 70; Alfred Métraux (1946), p. 343; Karl Gustav Izikowitz, Musical and Other Sound Instruments of the South American Indians (1935), p. 210; all via Otto Zerries, 'The Bull-roarer among South American Indians,' Revista do Museu Paulista n.s. 7 (1953), pp. 288-289 n. 2","url":"https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/E_Am1937-0316-28-a"}],"source_citations":"British Museum object Am1937,0316.28.a; Erland Nordenskiöld (1913), p. 70; Alfred Métraux (1946), p. 343; Karl Gustav Izikowitz, Musical and Other Sound Instruments of the South American Indians (1935), p. 210; all via Otto Zerries, 'The Bull-roarer among South American Indians,' Revista do Museu Paulista n.s. 7 (1953), pp. 288-289 n. 2","source_display":"British Museum object Am1937,0316.28.a; Erland Nordenskiöld (1913), p. 70; Alfred Métraux (1946), p. 343; Karl Gustav Izikowitz, Musical and Other Sound Instruments of the South American Indians (1935), p. 210; all via Otto Zerries, 'The Bull-roarer among South American Indians,' Revista do Museu Paulista n.s. 7 (1953), pp. 288-289 n. 2","date_citation_display":"","object_display":"An Eastern Mataco bullroarer from the Bermejo River region (British Museum Am1937,0316.28.a).","function_display":"Among the Mataco the bullroarer was a child's plaything; no ritual use is recorded for them.","confidence_display":"medium","attestation_label":"museum specimen","etymology_hedge":"","people_key":"eastern mataco","display_name":"Eastern Mataco bullroarer, Bermejo River","image":{"full":"assets/objects/museum_harvest/bm_E_Am1937-0316-28-a.jpg","thumb":"assets/objects/museum_harvest/thumbs/bm_E_Am1937-0316-28-a_thumb.jpg","alt":"Eastern Mataco (Wichí) bullroarer from the Bermejo River, Gran Chaco: a dark wooden blade with cord wrapped around its middle.","credit":"© The Trustees of the British Museum (E/Am1937-0316-28-a)","license":"CC BY-NC-SA 4.0","source_page":"https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/E_Am1937-0316-28-a","rehosted":true,"representative":false,"caption":"Eastern Mataco (Wichí) bullroarer from the Bermejo River, Gran Chaco."},"slug":"samer-006-eastern-mataco-wichi-bermejo-river"}
