They called it the waghwāgha, a name that whirs in the mouth; its old Arabic name was al-kharrāra, from the word for the gurgle of running water. The medieval dictionary Lisān al-ʿArab already knew it as a stick half a sandal long, tied to a string, that sounds when the string is moved. In 1935 old men remembered it from their boyhood and children still played it, beside its two neighbours in the boys' kit: the buzz disc pulled between two hands, and the iron-tipped top.","pull_quote":"يوثقون خشبة عرضها يقارب الثلاثة سانتيمات وطولها العشرة، بخيط، فيحركون الخيط فتدور الخشبة فتصوِّت.","pull_quote_translation":"They tie a piece of wood about three centimetres wide and ten long with a thread, then move the thread, and the wood turns and sounds.","pull_quote_cite":"Abd al-Sattar al-Qarghuli, al-Alʿāb al-shaʿbiyya li-fityān al-ʿIrāq (1935), p. 63.","term_gloss":"waghwāgha: Baghdadi Arabic sound-name for the toy. al-kharrāra: the classical Arabic name, from kharra / kharīr, the purl or murmur of running water.","cls":"play_practical","class_label":"Play / practical","color":"#24766D","is_candidate":false,"flags":["toy_survival"],"f_jade_complex":false,"f_women_taboo":false,"f_women_special":false,"f_snake":false,"sources":[{"citation":"Abd al-Sattar al-Qarghuli, al-Alʿāb al-shaʿbiyya li-fityān al-ʿIrāq (1935; Hindawi, 2018), pp. 12, 63","url":"https://downloads.hindawi.org/books/46363693.pdf"},{"citation":"Ibn Manẓūr, Lisān al-ʿArab, s.v. kh-r-r, quoted in Laʿib al-ʿArab (Arabic Wikisource), p. 24","url":"https://ar.wikisource.org/wiki/صفحة:لعب_العرب_(الطبعة_الأولى).pdf/24"}],"source_citations":"Abd al-Sattar al-Qarghuli, al-Alʿāb al-shaʿbiyya li-fityān al-ʿIrāq (1935; Hindawi, 2018), pp. 12, 63; Ibn Manẓūr, Lisān al-ʿArab, s.v. kh-r-r, quoted in Laʿib al-ʿArab (Arabic Wikisource), p. 24","source_display":"Abd al-Sattar al-Qarghuli, al-Alʿāb al-shaʿbiyya li-fityān al-ʿIrāq (1935; Hindawi, 2018), pp. 12, 63; Ibn Manẓūr, Lisān al-ʿArab, s.v. kh-r-r, quoted in Laʿib al-ʿArab (Arabic Wikisource), p. 24","date_citation_display":"","object_display":"A wooden slat about 10 cm long and 3 cm wide, tied to a thread.","function_display":"Boys' game: moving the thread set the slat turning and sounding.","confidence_display":"medium","attestation_label":"ethnographic attestation","etymology_hedge":"","people_key":"baghdad boys","display_name":"Baghdad waghwāgha, the boys' whirring slat","image":{"full":"assets/objects/HASSAN1980-002_hassan1980_fig8.jpg","thumb":"assets/objects/HASSAN1980-002_hassan1980_fig8_thumb.jpg","credit":"Schéhérazade Qassim Hassan, Les instruments de musique en Irak (Paris/The Hague: Mouton, 1980), fig. 8 (p. 48)","license":"© the publisher; low-resolution rehosted research figure — the row's own cited illustration","source_page":"https://doi.org/10.1515/9783112321348","rehosted":true,"representative":true,"caption":"The plain Iraqi rhombe of the Bahdinan Kurds.","pool_id":"auto-HASSAN1980-002_hassan1980_fig8"},"slug":"qarghuli1935-001-baghdad-boys-iraqi-arabic"}
