Thirty-three centimetres of wood, rounded at both ends, with its henequen cord still knotted through the top: a complete working rig. The Musée de l'Homme ledger entered it as 'diable ou rhomb' — devil or bullroarer — and stopped there; whose hands whirled it, and to what end, went unwritten. Stresser-Péan himself called the village Huastec: his plates from the same 1938 mission caption a new-maize festival and a crystal-gazing cure among the \"indios huastecos\" (Huastec Indians) of San José Xilatzén, and in his survey of the Huasteca he counts the rombo, the bullroarer, among the ancient instruments the Huastecs still kept alive, with the rattle, the flute, the drum and the teponaztli.","pull_quote":"","pull_quote_translation":"","pull_quote_cite":"","term_gloss":"","cls":"unknown","class_label":"Function not recorded","color":"#6B7884","is_candidate":false,"flags":[],"f_jade_complex":false,"f_women_taboo":false,"f_women_special":false,"f_snake":false,"sources":[{"citation":"Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, 71.1938.164.352 (ex Musée de l'Homme 38.164.352), from San José Xilatzén, Tanlajás, San Luis Potosí; collected by Guy Stresser-Péan, 1930–1938.","url":"https://collections.quaibranly.fr/?action=search&field=/Record/ObjectNumber&label=N%C2%B0%20de%20gestion&value=71.1938.164.352","archive":"https://web.archive.org/web/20261013023234/https://collections.quaibranly.fr/?action=search&field=/Record/ObjectNumber&label=N%C2%B0%20de%20gestion&value=71.1938.164.352"},{"citation":"Guilhem Olivier (ed.), Viaje a la Huasteca con Guy Stresser-Péan (CEMCA, 2008), Láminas 5–6, §47.","url":"https://books.openedition.org/cemca/4002","archive":"https://web.archive.org/web/20260404034338/https://books.openedition.org/cemca/4002"}],"source_citations":"Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, 71.1938.164.352 (ex Musée de l'Homme 38.164.352), from San José Xilatzén, Tanlajás, San Luis Potosí; collected by Guy Stresser-Péan, 1930–1938.; Guilhem Olivier (ed.), Viaje a la Huasteca con Guy Stresser-Péan (CEMCA, 2008), Láminas 5–6, §47.","source_display":"Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, 71.1938.164.352 (ex Musée de l'Homme 38.164.352), from San José Xilatzén, Tanlajás, San Luis Potosí; collected by Guy Stresser-Péan, 1930–1938.; Guilhem Olivier (ed.), Viaje a la Huasteca con Guy Stresser-Péan (CEMCA, 2008), Láminas 5–6, §47.","date_citation_display":"","object_display":"Wooden bullroarer, 33 x 6.5 x 2 cm, 69 g, with rounded spatulate ends and its henequen (agave) fibre suspension cord tied through the upper end, the rig intact.","function_display":"Not recorded for this piece; Stresser-Péan, who collected it, counted the rombo among the ancient instruments the Huastecs kept alive beside the rattle, flute, drum and teponaztli (Stresser-Péan, Viaje a la Huasteca, §47).","confidence_display":"high","attestation_label":"museum specimen","etymology_hedge":"","people_key":"san jos","display_name":"Xilatzén diable roarer","image":{"full":"assets/objects/MUS2026-191_qb_135654_xilatzen.jpg","thumb":"assets/objects/MUS2026-191_qb_135654_xilatzen_thumb.jpg","alt":"San José Xilatzén bullroarer from the Huasteca: a pale flat blade with a rounded paddle-like end and an intact looped henequen-fibre suspension rig.","credit":"© Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, 71.1938.164.352 (coll.
