After sounding the boards, they left them on the eastern edge of the garden so the sun would not scorch the yams. Men danced with bows drawn, singing the names of yam varieties and calling on them to grow. So Gaméa of Mawáta told it. In other Kiwai tales Máigidúbu keeps gardens of his own, sometimes working them at night in human shape. Landtman brought this ceremonial blade from Kubu: over ninety centimetres of board painted red, black, white and yellow, dressed with berries and feathers.","pull_quote":"You come, my girl, I no snake, you no fright along me.","pull_quote_translation":"","pull_quote_cite":"Gunnar Landtman, The Folk-Tales of the Kiwai Papuans (Helsingfors, 1917), tale 414, p. 456","term_gloss":"","cls":"sacred","class_label":"Sacred / spirit","color":"#8A5A2B","is_candidate":false,"flags":["snake","women_special","female_priority_myth","agriculture"],"f_jade_complex":false,"f_women_taboo":false,"f_women_special":true,"f_snake":true,"sources":[{"citation":"British Museum, Oc1912,1217.6, bullroarer, Kubu, Western Province, Papua New Guinea; donated by Gunnar Landtman, 1912.","url":"https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/E_Oc1912-1217-6"},{"citation":"Gunnar Landtman, The Folk-Tales of the Kiwai Papuans (Helsingfors, 1917), tale 261A, p. 317; tale 414, pp. 456–457.","url":"https://archive.org/details/actasocietatissc47suom/page/317/mode/1up"}],"source_citations":"British Museum, Oc1912,1217.6, bullroarer, Kubu, Western Province, Papua New Guinea; donated by Gunnar Landtman, 1912.; Gunnar Landtman, The Folk-Tales of the Kiwai Papuans (Helsingfors, 1917), tale 261A, p. 317; tale 414, pp. 456–457.","source_display":"British Museum, Oc1912,1217.6, bullroarer, Kubu, Western Province, Papua New Guinea; donated by Gunnar Landtman, 1912.; Gunnar Landtman, The Folk-Tales of the Kiwai Papuans (Helsingfors, 1917), tale 261A, p. 317; tale 414, pp. 456–457.","date_citation_display":"","object_display":"90.5 x 28.5 x 4 cm wooden bullroarer, painted red, black, white, and yellow and ornamented with berries and feathers; materials also include seed, gum, and rattan.","function_display":"Ceremonial.","confidence_display":"medium to high","attestation_label":"museum specimen","etymology_hedge":"","people_key":"kubu","display_name":"Kubu blade, waking the yam ground","image":{"full":"assets/objects/PNG106_finna_vk4902_716.jpg","thumb":"assets/objects/PNG106_finna_vk4902_716_thumb.jpg","alt":"Kiwai madubu from the Fly River mouth: a broad reddish-brown wooden blade with pale nested diamonds, curved bands and cross-hatching, and a small projection at one end.","credit":"Finnish Heritage Agency / Museovirasto, Landtman collection (VK4902:716), CC BY 4.0","license":"CC BY 4.0","source_page":"https://finna.fi/Record/musketti.M012%3AVK4902%3A716","rehosted":true,"representative":true,"caption":"A Kiwai blade from Landtman’s own Fly River collection.","pool_id":"auto-PNG106_finna_vk4902_716"},"slug":"mus2026-153-kubu-western-province"}
