Three were long knife handles cut from red-deer foot bones, grooved at each end to hold blades of flint or obsidian, and badly scorched by fire. The fourth is this strip, cut from the rib of an ox or a big red deer: flat and straight-sided, rounded at the top and drilled with a single hole, its far end broken away. Obsidian from the same level came from the volcanoes of eastern Anatolia.","pull_quote":"","pull_quote_translation":"","pull_quote_cite":"","term_gloss":"","cls":"unknown","class_label":"Function not recorded","color":"#6B7884","is_candidate":true,"flags":[],"f_jade_complex":false,"f_women_taboo":false,"f_women_special":false,"f_snake":false,"f_archaeology":true,"archaeology_kind":"object","date_display":"c. 6300–6000 BC","date_qualification":"Hassuna-period level 13; object not directly dated.","date_basis":"cultural_phase","date_confidence":"low","date_citation":"mortensen1970_shimshara_sh572, Mortensen 1970 pp. 20, 58–59; Flohr et al. 2020 p. 192","sources":[{"citation":"Peder Mortensen, Tell Shimshara: The Hassuna Period, Historisk-filosofiske Skrifter 5(2) (1970), pp. 58–59, fig. 49d; Colin Renfrew, 'Tell Shimshara and the traffic in obsidian', pp. 139–140","url":"http://publ.royalacademy.dk/backend/web/uploads/2019-07-23/AFL%202/SH_5_00_00_1970-1971_6472/SH_5_02_00_1970_740.pdf"},{"citation":"Pascal Flohr et al., 'Radiocarbon dating of Bestansur and Shimshara', in The Early Neolithic of the Eastern Fertile Crescent (2020), pp. 187–196","url":"https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid%3Ab6ae3d52-fb1d-4b45-8eeb-2a41a6995ed6/files/rnk322f374"}],"source_citations":"Peder Mortensen, Tell Shimshara: The Hassuna Period, Historisk-filosofiske Skrifter 5(2) (1970), pp. 58–59, fig. 49d; Colin Renfrew, 'Tell Shimshara and the traffic in obsidian', pp. 139–140; Pascal Flohr et al., 'Radiocarbon dating of Bestansur and Shimshara', in The Early Neolithic of the Eastern Fertile Crescent (2020), pp. 187–196","source_display":"Peder Mortensen, Tell Shimshara: The Hassuna Period, Historisk-filosofiske Skrifter 5(2) (1970), pp. 187–196","date_citation_display":"Mortensen 1970 pp. 20, 58–59; Flohr et al. 2020 p. 192","object_display":"Flat strip cut from the lower part of a rib of an ox or a large red deer, with parallel sides, a thin lens-shaped section and one rounded end pierced by a single hole; the other end is broken.
