Klaus-Peter Koch put it in his list of whirled aerophones but printed a question mark beside it, and in his text called it a piece that can be read as a Schwirrgerät only conditionally. He then set it apart from the rest: the long oval bone blades pierced at the broad end, the shape he gives for every other Mesolithic find in the group, are described with Hohen Viecheln expressly excepted. Whatever its shape, it was not theirs. A perforated bone rod from the same place turns up in Koch's very next list.","pull_quote":"Die Form der mesolithischen Funde ist, sieht man von einem nur bedingt als Schwirrgerät zu deutenden Exemplar aus Hohen Viecheln ab, länglich-oval mit Tendenz zur Stromlinienform.","pull_quote_translation":"The form of the Mesolithic finds is - leaving aside one specimen from Hohen Viecheln that can be interpreted as a whirring device only conditionally - elongated-oval with a tendency towards a streamlined shape.","pull_quote_cite":"Koch 1992:119","term_gloss":"Schwirrgerät: German, \"whirring device\" - the standard archaeological term for a bullroarer.","cls":"unknown","class_label":"Function not recorded","color":"#6B7884","is_candidate":true,"flags":[],"f_jade_complex":false,"f_women_taboo":false,"f_women_special":false,"f_snake":false,"f_archaeology":true,"archaeology_kind":"object","date_display":"c. 9000–7000 BC","date_qualification":"Hohen Viecheln Early Mesolithic site horizon; object not directly dated.","date_basis":"site_horizon","date_confidence":"low","date_citation":"koch1992_hohen_viecheln, pp. 119 and 132; David 2019 pp. 127–162 especially pp. 127–129 and table 4","sources":[{"citation":"Klaus-Peter Koch, 'Musikarchäologische Quellen aus dem östlichen Deutschland: Zwischenbericht,' Jahresschrift für mitteldeutsche Vorgeschichte 75 (1992): 101-136, at pp. 119 and 132 (Fundliste 7)","url":"https://journals.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/index.php/jsmv/article/view/83836","archive":"https://web.archive.org/web/20241113214443/https://journals.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/index.php/jsmv/article/view/83836"}],"source_citations":"Klaus-Peter Koch, 'Musikarchäologische Quellen aus dem östlichen Deutschland: Zwischenbericht,' Jahresschrift für mitteldeutsche Vorgeschichte 75 (1992): 101-136, at pp. 119 and 132 (Fundliste 7)","source_display":"Klaus-Peter Koch, 'Musikarchäologische Quellen aus dem östlichen Deutschland: Zwischenbericht,' Jahresschrift für mitteldeutsche Vorgeschichte 75 (1992): 101-136, at pp. 119 and 132 (Fundliste 7)","date_citation_display":"Koch 1992 Hohen Viecheln, pp. 119 and 132; David 2019 pp. 127–162 especially pp. 127–129 and table 4","object_display":"Mesolithic bone find, like the rest of Koch's group, but expressly excepted from its elongated-oval, streamlined form with a perforation at the broader end.","function_display":"Not recorded.","confidence_display":"low to medium","attestation_label":"archaeological find","etymology_hedge":"","people_key":"hohen viecheln","display_name":"Hohen Viecheln whirring device","image":{"full":"assets/objects/MUS2026-196_mim2295_kikirpa.jpg","thumb":"assets/objects/MUS2026-196_mim2295_kikirpa_thumb.jpg","alt":"The Brussels planchette ronflante, a wooden humming board with its cord, MIM inv. 2295.","credit":"KIK-IRPA, Brussels (Belgium), cliche M131915 — MIM inv. 2295","license":"CC BY 4.0","source_page":"https://balat.kikirpa.be/photo/M131915","rehosted":true,"representative":true,"caption":"The Brussels planchette ronflante, a wooden 'humming board' on its cord.","pool_id":"auto-MUS2026-196_mim2295_kikirpa"},"slug":"koch1992-008-hohen-viecheln-mesolithic-find"}
