J. R. Harding reproduces it as a \"Magdalenian bull-roarer pendant,\" drawn at twice natural size from a figure first made by the Abbé Henri Breuil and later reproduced by Paolo Graziosi in Palaeolithic Art. The argument is one of resemblance: the toothed blade-shape is read as a miniature copy of a bull-roarer, and Harding notes the engraving recalls \"some of the designs shown by Australian churinga,\" the sacred boards whose appearance early prehistorians borrowed to interpret Ice Age Europe. Breuil himself, publishing the piece in 1902, claimed nothing of the kind: he described a pendeloque — a pendant — that \"does indeed seem to be an amulet.\" No bull-roarer of wood survives from the period; Harding writes that the wooden prototypes these pendants suggest \"have not, of course, been preserved.\"","pull_quote":"bone-, ivory- and sometimes stone-pendants, exactly imitating the blade of the instrument, from deposits of Magdalenian age in France","pull_quote_translation":"","pull_quote_cite":"Harding 1973:40 (African Music 5(3))","term_gloss":"","cls":"unknown","class_label":"Function not recorded","color":"#6B7884","is_candidate":false,"flags":[],"f_jade_complex":false,"f_women_taboo":false,"f_women_special":false,"f_snake":false,"f_archaeology":true,"archaeology_kind":"object","date_display":"c. 17,000–14,500 BC","date_qualification":"Layer 1 red-clay context; not a direct object assay.","date_basis":"cultural_phase","date_confidence":"medium","date_citation":"Breuil 1902, L'Anthropologie 13:152 fig. 4 caption; Bourdier et al. 2017, L'essor du Magdalénien, introduction","sources":[{"citation":"Harding, 'The Bull-roarer in History and in Antiquity,' African Music 5(3) (1973): 40-42, at pp. 40-41 and fig. 1; H.
