One, by Eugenio Reolon of Riva presso Chieri, is a thin rectangular board with rounded corners and bevelled sides, a nail driven into an end-tang, and a finely twisted cord nearly two metres long wound around the wood. The other, by Salvatore Pellegrino of Cambiano, is cut in the shape of a fish, and instead of a cord it is rigged with a chain of small stainless-steel balls linked by pins and finished with a length of nylon thread. Both belong to the Piedmontese sound-landscape collection assembled over decades by Domenico Torta.","pull_quote":"Rombo costituito da una sottile tavola di legno a forma di pesce.","pull_quote_translation":"Bullroarer made of a thin wooden board in the shape of a fish.","pull_quote_cite":"Civico Museo del Paesaggio Sonoro, Riva presso Chieri, inv. 0217SM","term_gloss":"Italian for bullroarer; also a humming or roaring sound.","cls":"play_practical","class_label":"Play / practical","color":"#24766D","is_candidate":false,"flags":["toy_survival"],"f_jade_complex":false,"f_women_taboo":false,"f_women_special":false,"f_snake":false,"etymology":"The Italian name for a whirled noisemaker, carried down from Latin rhombus and Greek rhombos.","literal_gloss":"rhombus; bullroarer","semantic_cluster":"classical_spinning_object","etymology_confidence":"medium","sources":[{"citation":"Civico Museo del Paesaggio Sonoro, Riva presso Chieri, inv. 0216SM and 0217SM, via MIMO (Musical Instrument Museums Online)","url":"https://mimo-international.com/MIMO/doc/IFD/OAI_MPS_231","archive":"https://web.archive.org/web/20261013011340/https://mimo-international.com/MIMO/doc/IFD/OAI_MPS_231"}],"source_citations":"Civico Museo del Paesaggio Sonoro, Riva presso Chieri, inv. 0216SM and 0217SM, via MIMO (Musical Instrument Museums Online)","source_display":"Civico Museo del Paesaggio Sonoro, Riva presso Chieri, inv. 0216SM and 0217SM, via MIMO (Musical Instrument Museums Online)","date_citation_display":"","object_display":"Thin rectangular wooden board, rounded corners, bevelled sides, end-tang with nail to which a finely twisted thin cord is tied (inv. 0216SM, maker Eugenio Reolon, Riva presso Chieri); second fish-shaped example inv. 0217SM (Salvatore Pellegrino, Cambiano).","function_display":"Folk noisemaker.","confidence_display":"low to medium","attestation_label":"museum specimen","etymology_hedge":"","people_key":"piedmontese folk","display_name":"Piedmont folk rombo","image":{"full":"assets/objects/EXH2026-010_mps_0216SM.jpg","thumb":"assets/objects/EXH2026-010_mps_0216SM_thumb.jpg","alt":"A rectangular wooden Piedmontese rombo with rounded ends, its cord looped at one end and wound around the board.","credit":"Civico Museo del Paesaggio Sonoro, Riva presso Chieri (0216SM, maker Eugenio Reolon), via MIMO","license":"MIMO / Museo del Paesaggio Sonoro — license unstated; rehosted for non-commercial research","source_page":"https://mimo-international.com/MIMO/doc/IFD/OAI_MPS_231","rehosted":true,"representative":false,"caption":"A rectangular wooden rombo with rounded, bevelled edges, its cord tied at a knobbed end-tang and wound around the board."},"slug":"exh2026-010-piedmontese-folk-rombo"}
