They grew wheat, barley and lentils, kept cattle, sheep and goats, still hunted, and, as residues in their earliest bowls show, were already processing milk. Of the more than three thousand bone tools found in the village, forty-three belong to one family: ribs split lengthwise into thin blanks, ground flat and drilled from both faces near the broad end. This one survives complete, a slim drop of bone with a clean eye at its head, tapering to a point.","pull_quote":"","pull_quote_translation":"","pull_quote_cite":"","term_gloss":"","cls":"unknown","class_label":"Function not recorded","color":"#6B7884","is_candidate":true,"flags":[],"f_jade_complex":false,"f_women_taboo":false,"f_women_special":false,"f_snake":false,"f_archaeology":true,"archaeology_kind":"object","date_display":"c. 6600–6000 BC","date_qualification":"Late Neolithic Layer VI context; object not directly dated.","date_basis":"stratigraphic","date_confidence":"medium","date_citation":"erdalkiran2022_barcin_bh39110, Erdalkıran 2022 pp. 98–99; Özbal et al. 2024 pp. 1, 3","sources":[{"citation":"Mücella Erdalkıran, 'Late Neolithic Bone Shuttles from Barcın Höyük', TÜBA-AR 31 (2022): 97–106, fig. 5","url":"https://dergipark.org.tr/en/download/article-file/2810238"},{"citation":"Hadi Özbal, Adrià Breu et al., 'From bowls to pots: changing vessel technology and milk processing at Barcın Höyük', PLoS ONE 19(5) (2024): e0302788","url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0302788"}],"source_citations":"Mücella Erdalkıran, 'Late Neolithic Bone Shuttles from Barcın Höyük', TÜBA-AR 31 (2022): 97–106, fig. 5; Hadi Özbal, Adrià Breu et al., 'From bowls to pots: changing vessel technology and milk processing at Barcın Höyük', PLoS ONE 19(5) (2024): e0302788","source_display":"Mücella Erdalkıran, 'Late Neolithic Bone Shuttles from Barcın Höyük', TÜBA-AR 31 (2022): 97–106, fig. 5; Hadi Özbal, Adrià Breu et al., 'From bowls to pots: changing vessel technology and milk processing at Barcın Höyük', PLoS ONE 19(5) (2024): e0302788","date_citation_display":"Erdalkıran 2022 pp. 98–99; Özbal et al. 2024 pp. 1, 3","object_display":"Complete thin blade of split rib bone, drop-shaped, broad and rounded at the head and tapering to a point, with a hole drilled from both faces through the head.
