That doubled oblique groove is the whole puzzle: a cord that dragged hard and at an angle, as if the thing hung heavy or turned. Five such large blades cluster in Early Jōmon Kanagawa and Gunma; this one lay in a pit at the Endō Hiroya settlement some 6,000 years ago. Catalogued as a body ornament, it carries the slant a cord cuts when a blade is whirled.","pull_quote":"","pull_quote_translation":"","pull_quote_cite":"","term_gloss":"ヘラ状垂飾 (hera-jō suishoku): 'spatula-shaped pendant'","cls":"unknown","class_label":"Function not recorded","color":"#6B7884","is_candidate":true,"flags":[],"f_jade_complex":true,"f_women_taboo":false,"f_women_special":false,"f_snake":false,"f_archaeology":true,"archaeology_kind":"object","date_display":"c. 4050–3650 BC","date_qualification":"","date_basis":"cultural_phase","date_confidence":"medium","date_citation":"endohiroya_heritagemap_80810, Kanagawa 2024 lecture PDF Fig. 2; HeritageMap pit-context route","sources":[{"citation":"Kanagawa Prefecture archaeology lecture (2025), Fig. 2, after Tsubota 2017; Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, HeritageMap, Endō Hiroya site","url":"https://www.pref.kanagawa.jp/documents/8040/r6kouza-7.pdf","archive":"https://web.archive.org/web/20260212035318/https://www.pref.kanagawa.jp/documents/8040/r6kouza-7.pdf"}],"source_citations":"Kanagawa Prefecture archaeology lecture (2025), Fig. 2, after Tsubota 2017; Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, HeritageMap, Endō Hiroya site","source_display":"Kanagawa Prefecture archaeology lecture (2025), Fig. 2, after Tsubota 2017; Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, HeritageMap, Endō Hiroya site","date_citation_display":"Kanagawa 2024 lecture PDF Fig. 2; HeritageMap pit-context route","object_display":"A large serpentinite blade, over 10 cm long, pierced once near the top; around the hole, both faces are worn in a slant of nearly 45 degrees.
