J. J. Brody read the painter as working in perspective: the great flaring form is not a bird's tail but a small bull-roarer, far out at the end of its cord, whirling above the man's head. The bowl is nineteen centimetres across and was made in the Mimbres Classic centuries, around AD 1000-1150 - the one place in the ancient Southwest where the instrument was drawn in use rather than left in the ground. Everything turns on granting the foreshortening; refuse it and the shape goes back to being unreadable.","pull_quote":"a small bull-roarer on a string whirling about the head of the man","pull_quote_translation":"","pull_quote_cite":"Brody 1983:90","term_gloss":"","cls":"unknown","class_label":"Function not recorded","color":"#6B7884","is_candidate":false,"flags":[],"f_jade_complex":false,"f_women_taboo":false,"f_women_special":false,"f_snake":false,"f_archaeology":true,"archaeology_kind":"rock_art","date_display":"c. 1000–1150 AD","date_qualification":"Style III / Mimbres Classic Black-on-white attribution; individual bowl not directly dated.","date_basis":"typological_attribution","date_confidence":"medium","date_citation":"brody1983_mattocks_bowl_bullroarer, Brody 1983 pp. 45 and 90 color pl. 21","sources":[{"citation":"J.
