Elkin in the University of Sydney's archives is a bundle of notes on the bullroarers of the Ungarinyin and Worora of the north Kimberley, closed to public inspection in keeping with the secret-sacred status the instruments hold in male initiation. Elkin collected the material on his Kimberley fieldwork of 1927-28, carried out under Radcliffe-Brown's direction. The bullroarers themselves did not stay in Sydney: according to the university's repatriation curator, eleven that Elkin acquired in 1928 were returned in 2001 to the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre.","pull_quote":"","pull_quote_translation":"","pull_quote_cite":"","term_gloss":"","cls":"restricted","class_label":"Restricted","color":"#A43C2F","is_candidate":false,"flags":["snake","initiation"],"f_jade_complex":false,"f_women_taboo":false,"f_women_special":false,"f_snake":true,"sources":[{"citation":"University of Sydney Archives, REF-00092397, 'SENSITIVE CONTENT C.7 Bullroarers,' bundle 2","url":"https://archives-search.sydney.edu.au/nodes/view/145393","archive":"https://web.archive.org/web/20260110022709/https://archives-search.sydney.edu.au/nodes/view/145393"},{"citation":"University of Sydney Archives, REF-00096408, 'SENSITIVE CONTENT Initiation in the Northern Kimberley'","url":"https://archives-search.sydney.edu.au/nodes/view/149570","archive":"https://web.archive.org/web/20250917202445/https://archives-search.sydney.edu.au/nodes/view/149570"}],"source_citations":"University of Sydney Archives, REF-00092397, 'SENSITIVE CONTENT C.7 Bullroarers,' bundle 2; University of Sydney Archives, REF-00096408, 'SENSITIVE CONTENT Initiation in the Northern Kimberley'","source_display":"University of Sydney Archives, REF-00092397, 'SENSITIVE CONTENT C.7 Bullroarers,' bundle 2; University of Sydney Archives, REF-00096408, 'SENSITIVE CONTENT Initiation in the Northern Kimberley'","date_citation_display":"","object_display":"A closed, sensitive bundle in the A.
