Spencer recorded the belief that ran through the mainland tribes and was held by the women and children kept away from the rite — that the instrument's drone was the voice of a spirit come to carry the youth away. The glass-plate negative of the Larrakia and Mungarai initiation churinga, made in 1911, survives in Museum Victoria.","pull_quote":"they, like the women and children, have been taught to believe that the sound is the voice of a great old man who has come to take them away into the mangrove scrub.","pull_quote_translation":"","pull_quote_cite":"Spencer 1914, Native Tribes of the Northern Territory of Australia","term_gloss":"","cls":"restricted","class_label":"Restricted","color":"#A43C2F","is_candidate":false,"flags":["spirit_voice","initiation","women_taboo"],"f_jade_complex":false,"f_women_taboo":true,"f_women_special":false,"f_snake":false,"sources":[{"citation":"Baldwin Spencer, Native Tribes of the Northern Territory of Australia (1914), pp. 26, 153, 155","url":"https://archive.org/stream/cu31924028623076/cu31924028623076_djvu.txt"}],"source_citations":"Baldwin Spencer, Native Tribes of the Northern Territory of Australia (1914), pp. 26, 153, 155","source_display":"Baldwin Spencer, Native Tribes of the Northern Territory of Australia (1914), pp. 26, 153, 155","date_citation_display":"","object_display":"Sacred bullroarers shown to initiates","function_display":"Initiation-associated sacred bullroarers among Larrakia","confidence_display":"high","attestation_label":"ethnographic attestation","etymology_hedge":"","people_key":"larrakia","display_name":"Larrakia Bidu-bidu Darwin","image":{"full":"assets/objects/shared_spencer1914_plateII_figs3_4.jpg","thumb":"assets/objects/shared_spencer1914_plateII_figs3_4_thumb.jpg","alt":"Spencer’s plate of two Larrakia bidu-bidu, each with a long central groove, rows of short transverse cuts and a looped cord at its squared end.","credit":"Spencer, Native Tribes of the Northern Territory (Macmillan, 1914), Plate II","license":"Public domain (Spencer, Native Tribes of the Northern Territory, 1914)","source_page":"https://archive.org/details/cu31924028623076","rehosted":true,"representative":false,"caption":"Spencer's own plate of the Larrakia bidu-bidu.","additional":[{"full":"assets/objects/AUSIN-011_spencer1914_fig44_swinging.jpg","thumb":"assets/objects/AUSIN-011_spencer1914_fig44_swinging_thumb.jpg","alt":"Archival photograph of Larrakia men with pale ceremonial body markings in open woodland, one swinging a bullroarer during initiation while others look on.","credit":"Baldwin Spencer, Native Tribes of the Northern Territory of Australia (Macmillan, 1914), Fig. 44","license":"Public domain (published 1914)","source_page":"https://archive.org/details/cu31924028623076","rehosted":true,"representative":false,"caption":"A Larrakia man swings the bullroarer during initiation."},{"full":"assets/objects/AUSIN-011_spencer1914_fig45_showing.jpg","thumb":"assets/objects/AUSIN-011_spencer1914_fig45_showing_thumb.jpg","credit":"Baldwin Spencer, Native Tribes of the Northern Territory of Australia (Macmillan, 1914), Fig. 45","license":"Public domain (published 1914)","source_page":"https://archive.org/details/cu31924028623076","rehosted":true,"representative":false,"caption":"The bullroarer is shown to the Larrakia initiates."},{"full":"assets/objects/AUSIN-011_spencer1914_fig46_hands.jpg","thumb":"assets/objects/AUSIN-011_spencer1914_fig46_hands_thumb.jpg","credit":"Baldwin Spencer, Native Tribes of the Northern Territory of Australia (Macmillan, 1914), Fig. 46","license":"Public domain (published 1914)","source_page":"https://archive.org/details/cu31924028623076","rehosted":true,"representative":false,"caption":"The bullroarer is placed across the Larrakia initiates' hands."}]},"slug":"ausin-011-larrakia"}
