He called it a burrumbe, the local name for the rhombe. Its museum record is blunt about what such boards were for: one 'served until 1939 to drive the wild boar from the maize.' As it was told to the two researchers, the sound would put a boar or a wolf to flight, and pigs — herded in the open by young boys — were kept out of the cultivated fields the same way. The rhombe Mano made, twenty-nine notches cut along its half-metre blade, entered the Mucem collections, and his account of it survives in the Landes survey archive.","pull_quote":"Dans tous les cas de figure, l’idée est toujours la même: tenir un “mal” à distance par un son effrayant.","pull_quote_translation":"Whatever the case, the idea is always the same: to hold an “evil” at bay with a frightening sound.","pull_quote_cite":"Marie-Barbara Le Gonidec, “Le rhombe,” Les Réveillées (EHESS)","term_gloss":"burrumbe — the local Landes name for the rhombe (bullroarer), a thin board whirled on a cord; the source links it to the Basque names burruna and furrunfurra.","cls":"weather","class_label":"Weather / fertility magic","color":"#2F6FA3","is_candidate":false,"flags":["agriculture","toy_survival"],"f_jade_complex":false,"f_women_taboo":false,"f_women_special":false,"f_snake":false,"sources":[{"citation":"Marie-Barbara Le Gonidec, 'Le rhombe', Les Réveillées (EHESS), with the object page 'Rhombe (1966.114.4)'; Mucem 1966.114.4.1-2, Joconde notice 50020062497","url":"https://les-reveillees.ehess.fr/enquetes/rhombe-19661144","archive":"https://web.archive.org/web/20250811111139/https://les-reveillees.ehess.fr/enquetes/rhombe-19661144"}],"source_citations":"Marie-Barbara Le Gonidec, 'Le rhombe', Les Réveillées (EHESS), with the object page 'Rhombe (1966.114.4)'; Mucem 1966.114.4.1-2, Joconde notice 50020062497","source_display":"Marie-Barbara Le Gonidec, 'Le rhombe', Les Réveillées (EHESS), with the object page 'Rhombe (1966.114.4)'; Mucem 1966.114.4.1-2, Joconde notice 50020062497","date_citation_display":"","object_display":"A 47.5 cm rhombe of white wood (fir) with twenty-nine notches cut along the blade, and its cord, made by Léonce Mano during the 1965-1966 Landes field survey; photographs record him making and playing it (Mucem 1966.114.4.1-2).","function_display":"","confidence_display":"high","attestation_label":"museum specimen","etymology_hedge":"","people_key":"leonce mano","display_name":"Commensacq Guidanson burrumbe rhombe","image":{"full":"assets/objects/ATL1966-001_atl1966-001-mucem-1966-114-4.jpg","thumb":"assets/objects/ATL1966-001_atl1966-001-mucem-1966-114-4_thumb.jpg","alt":"Léonce Mano’s wooden burrumbe bullroarer, with deep triangular notches along both edges and a cord tied through one end.","credit":"Mucem, Marseille, 1966.114.4; via EHESS Les réveillés","license":"Rights reserved (© Mucem); rehosted for non-commercial research","source_page":"https://les-reveillees.ehess.fr/enquetes/rhombe-19661144","rehosted":true,"representative":false,"caption":"Léonce Mano’s notched burrumbe from Commensacq, now in the Mucem.","additional":[{"full":"assets/objects/hunt_2026_10_03/ATL1966-001_mano_ph1966-99-441.jpg","thumb":"assets/objects/hunt_2026_10_03/thumbs/ATL1966-001_mano_ph1966-99-441_thumb.jpg","credit":"Photo Claudie Marcel-Dubois, 1965 — Mucem Ph.1966.99.441; via Les Réveillées (EHESS)","license":"© EHESS / Les Réveillées — reproduction by authorisation; rehosted for non-commercial research","source_page":"https://les-reveillees.ehess.fr/enquetes/le-rhombe","rehosted":true,"representative":false,"caption":"Léonce Mano in his beret holds up his notched burrumbe by its cord, Commensacq, Landes, 1965."}]},"slug":"atl1966-001-leonce-mano-guidanson-commensacq"}
